I had the same problem with a used speedo. Someone had re-set the mile reading before I got it.

It turned out that when you take off the small printed circuit board from the back of the speedo ( after taking the cluster out of the car) ( and not the main board, just the small board that is part of the speedo itself. well when you remove the small board you end up breaking one if the three tiny copper wires from the coil to the board. You will see what I am talking about when you get the speedo apart.
Check very carefully for the broken wire, it is very hard to see. just solder in a short piece if wire and mine started to work.

If your car has been yours for a long while and it just quit on its own, then look elsewhere.
If you suspect someone tampering, you will see the broken wire.


i have 88 bmw 528e, the speedometer works, but the odometer doesnt, any suggestions on where to start looking
