I had the same problem as you describe so I replaced the master cyl only to have the same symptom two months later. Upon further inspection, I found the master cyl mounting bracket had cracked. This caused the master cyl to go bad and also the clutch assist spring to break. Weld bracket in car. Search the archives for a more detailed description of the procedure.

My clutch lasted 178K before I replaced it and the only reason I did replace was that my tranny went bad.

Also, I've heard that the clutch release fork can crack of bend, but don't have personal experience with that.

Hello! I think my clutch is gone! It has been really hard to shift lately. I replaced the slave and master cylinders a year ago and solved my hard shifting problem when cold. This clutch probably has about 100,000 miles on it but the car is not abused. The clutch doesn't slip and there is no strange noises that signal a tired clutch or throw out bearing. Bentley manual suggest binding. Can someone clarify my problem. I'm just not ready to crawl under the car to do this ardous task! I know there are no adjustments in this system but I may be overlooking something. Thanks
