I am probably one of the few who have kept their SLS even after 6 years of ownership. I have Koni adjustables in the front and Dinan sway bars. These are the only performance upgrades. I have however, spent quite a bit of time figuring out the systems to add manual control of the SLS. From the driver's seat, I can adjust the ride height to any position or allow it to operate normally. I have found the manual control to be advantageous for maintenance as I can remove the exhaust and axles without the use of a jack. Early on, I decided that I didn't want to lower the car because I wouldn't be able to drive up onto ramps (for those times I need the entire car up, like for control arms replacements). With the SLS in the full up position, I can drive up onto 4 Rhino ramps. Besides, the front spoiler has hit enough things at the stock ride height.
I think my car handles very well but I haven't driven any other M5's out on the track to see the difference. On the track, my car still understeers slightly but has a good balance overall. On the street, the body sway in minimal and the ride is good. A few fellow M5 owners have praised the handling compared to their totally stock M5's.
Over the years, I have replaced both accumulators and both shocks. I purchased brand new shocks from Carl Nelson at La Jolla Independent that lasted about 4 years. I now have used shocks that work great. The only other thing I have done is replaced the rubber seat on the pump's solenoid valve and the relay. Otherwise, the pump and system has been no problems.
