Yes I have heard of many instances of this. The bracket on the engine side of the box on the subframe looks really weak, luckily mine hasn't broken yet. I read on the E28 board somewhere about using a long bolt with two big thick washers to sandwich the subframe through the bi hole (?) and then pile washers on that to equal the original bracket height, then the box and a nut on top. Maybe you can have it welded on the car. Your steering box should be fine though.

I've heard that's a common problem. What is the effect? I'd like to know if I need a new steering box as well.

My steering box has ripped it's mounting bracket off of the cross member. What's up with that?
