I have a similar thing going on in my '85 535i. I don't really feel much heat coming from the area, but if I push down the leather boot, my shift lever is rather hot. I asked around about this, and the common consensus was that the exhaust heat was transmitting up, likely due to a corroded/missing heat shield.
