Sasha, if you're not concerned about the resale value, the car sounds like it has all the right stuff. But why screw around with a pieced together imitation, when you could buy the real thing for around the same price? There are always examples here on the classified that are in that price range. But hey, it's your money, and if everything checks out, I'm sure it would be fun to drive.

This post is from UUC Digest. I live near by and will be able to check this car out. Assuming that the body work was done well, is it a fair deal?

FOR SALE: 1988 M5, stealthy Ascot Gray with spoilers removed, no external insignia except the Roundels. 115K miles, $10,500. This car is a flawless transplant of EVERYTHING from a 1988 M5 into a clean, straight 1982 E28
body, which was stripped to the metal, re-painted, and built from the ground up.

Dinan springs, Bilstien Sport shocks, Fahey crank balancer and exhaust cam gear, new cooling system, new timing chain and tensioners, fairly new steering links, 5 16x8" M5 wheels, freshly powder coated with new Dunlop SP8000 tires. European 7" headlights. Custom stainless steel exhaust
system from Rob Levinson http://www.shortshifter.com/m5exhaust/
) with a new catalytic converter. Aluminum Rob Knob, with Rob's short-shift kit. The auto-leveling rear suspension has been removed in the Dinan conversion.
All M5 components are installed...engine, drivetrain, suspension, brakes, wiring harness, instruments, ABS, leather interior and seats, battery box in trunk, blacked-out trim, etc. You cannot tell that this is a
transplant without checking the VIN. The body is excellent except for a few paint chips, the interior is very good to excellent. New front seat leather, new door and window seals, new carpet. $3700 MB Quart sound system, with a
Sony head unit, big amp and removable subwoofer in the trunk.

This car is tight, very fast, clean, amazingly fun, invisible, and a fabulous daily driver. Everything works perfectly, including the marginal air conditioning. I've had her for 30K miles, and have taken methodical care of her, with all services done by Bavarian Professionals in
Berkeley, CA. She looks just like a stock 535i, except for the wheels and the oil cooler peeking out from the front. There is a California EPA sticker, and she gets smogged as an '88 M5, but registers as an '82 528e. The original, repainted trunk lid with the rear spoiler comes with the car, if you want it.
