Neil,

You're recommending synthetic oil? How come the owner's manual says, 'For M5, no reduced friction lubricants are permitted.' Kind of dictatorial, but still... This statement was right under the motor oil section.

David:

The BMW synthetic is only available in 5W30 at the local dealership. They recommend this for all the cars. It is a good deal at $3.80/liter with the CCA discount, but I prefer the 15W50 Mobil 1 for my M5 in GA.

Thanks for all your help so far with my new (to me) M5 - here's another question. I see our beloved M5s call for 15W40 weight oil. Hard to find in my area. My mechanic says 20W50 will work just as well. I don't plan to drive the car in the winter. Anyone with an opinion? (Silly question :)

David
