I am going to try this with a catalyst, because I have strict state and emissions standards in VA. The stock E28 M5 exhaust is a frickin pig. You can get better acceleration just from the weight reduction!! If you go to a single pipe, you would need at least a 2.75" diameter. The stock system is twin 50mm ID (1.97") pipes. A 3" pipe would be easier to source, bend (more exhaust shops would have a 3" mandrel), and find proper 3" mufflers, resonators, and catalytic converters.
