James:

you need at least 3.0" dia to beat dual 50mm. I've got a chart that shows cross sectional area for single and dual pipe configs in different sizes, on www.bmwe34m5.com under the faqs section.

The only possible chance of beating the stock exhaust is in weight savings or cost savings. Flow wise and tune wise, its quite optimal.

Any recomendations for High performance Exhaust systems. No cat required.

Try a custom stainless job. http://burnsstainless.com Much cheaper than a $600 B&B Triflow that will crack over time and boom your eardrums into pulp. Loud does not equal power. See a custom E30 M3 job at http://www.e30m3performance.com/installs/installs-2/exhaust/exh1.htm

I am going to try this with a catalyst, because I have strict state and emissions standards in VA. The stock E28 M5 exhaust is a frickin pig. You can get better acceleration just from the weight reduction!! If you go to a single pipe, you would need at least a 2.75" diameter. The stock system is twin 50mm ID (1.97") pipes. A 3" pipe would be easier to source, bend (more exhaust shops would have a 3" mandrel), and find proper 3" mufflers, resonators, and catalytic converters.
