why is my gearshift shaft so hot and why is there so much heat comming out of shift box area?

I have the same problem,I changed my shift knob to aluminum from UUC ,I went for a long drive today at the mountains and shift knob was hot,but when going back down the mountains it's all downhill and shift knob was not even warn.could this be a low transmission fuild or just heat coming from underneath
