Actually, if you take a 50mm pipe with 1.5mm wall, you get a 47mm ID pipe, which is what I thought the stock US M5 exhaust uses. 47mm x 2 pipes = 5.38 sq in cross sectional area. One 2.75" pipe with .062 wall (16 gauge, close to 1.5mm) has a 5.41 sq in cross sectional area.

There is weight savings, less aerodynamic drag (for the exhaust gasses) along the walls of the pipe, and better sound damping in a single, large pipe. A single 3" pipe yields a 6.49 sq in cross section, a 21% increase over the stock system!
