Is this rattling heat shield necessary? (archive)

The heat shield between the exhaust and the right rear axle is missing one of its fasteners and sounding a death rattle.

Do I replace the fastener or remove the heat shield?

It seems to offer some potential protection to the axle boots.

Thoughts?
