The part that fixed it for me wasn't the brake "bomb" (accumulator) but the hydraulic brake booster.

The part number is 34 33 1 156 925. The master cylinder mounts to the booster.

As I remember it, the part was pretty expensive.

The process can easily be done in a day, probably much less. It is straight forward with no surprises. The procedure is described pretty accurately in the Chilton manual.

If I was doing the job for someone else, I would suggest that they replace the master cylinder reservoir at the same time since you have to remove it too.

In my case, the reservoir had some gunk in it that I couldn't reach with a cotton swab and it had turned ugly yellow anyway.

If you don't have a set of flare-nut wrenches, you should probably get them (they're cheap enough). You will also need some new brake fluid and a little ATF.

Philo's brake buddy warns against the 540 rear brakes. I really like them but would like to hear your opinions too.
