Get the euro engine at 286 BHP standard. Throw in some Schrick 280 degree cams (if you have the later engine) plus a "superchip" upgrade is reckoned to give 320-330 BHP. Only problem is your emission tests. From reports from a guy in the UK who did this the difference (from the 286 BHP) engine was huge across the rev range.

Schrick cams in the Uk are around £1200 - not cheap.

Dont know if you can get cheap upgrades for this engine. Come to think of it I don't know if you can get cheap parts from BMW for this engine full stop.

My engine was "refreshed" at 77k miles in 1990. New main, big end bearings, new rings (no rebore), 2 new valves, new guides for the chain (but no new chain strangely) and all new gaskets. Done by Sytner BMW of Nottingham (well known racing outfit in the UK in the 80/90s)

All for £2800 including labour - about the same as yours. I know prices would have changed but nice to here what you get for your money.

Ian

I will have a complete list as to what the mechanic is going to do/replace tomorrow, but he quoted me 4K for refreshing the entire engine. Are there any performance hop ups I can do that are reasonably priced while he is in there? I would like to have 300 or so HP.. what does it take to get that?

FYI - It will have a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty for any problems engine related.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Josh
