Well, while I'm not positive there's a way to tell if the speedo has been replaced (some of the other board 'talent' might be able to answer that), if whomever owned the car when it stopped working had half a brain, they would have had a notorized mileage statement done on the car. This would serve as documentation that the odometer was replaced at X miles with a newer unit showing Y miles. Unless this has been done, I'd be a little leary of what other descrepencies might lurk in this car.
Just my $.02.
Good luck,

'88 M5
I have been working on the purchase of a very clean '88 M5. The car has had four owners. The title reads "exceeds mechanical limits" while the odo shows 45K.
Is there a way to tell if the speedometer / odometer unit has been replaced & or rebuilt?
I can't track down the previous owner who had the car for the 8 years prior to this title being issued to get the scoop!
Thanks.
