The TPS is only there to tell the ECU that the throttle is either wide open or fully closed for idle. It does nothing in between! 5 volts should be supplied to the switch via the lead that connects to it. Disconnect the lead, switch on the ignition and check the supply. I seem to remember the haynes manual telling me the correct pins to check for once! You should also get continuity about 10 degrees before fully open throttle. if not then replace the switch. The reason the car drives ok round the block is that the ECU is using only the airflow meter to work out how much fuel to dump into the engine and doesnt need the TPS. The idle speed will be slightly faster as the ECU thinks you have the throttle slightly open when the TPS is disconnected. You will also notice that the "Econometer" under the rev counter still indicates that fuel is passing into the engine on the over run(throttle shut going down a hill). IE it doesnt travel fully to the left as usual.
