Indeed! I had a faulty t-stat in the 88 iS and the idle was really rough and 'sticky'. A $9 part and 30 mins fixed it.

The other problem with running cold would be that the richer fuel-air mix might wash the oil off the cylinder walls, resulting in wear.

I would fix it ASAP.

Its actually a really good idea to put the thermostat in! otherwise the engine could be running too cold, not only will this affect combustion but it can also keep the oil too cold resulting in engine damage.
Engines are designed to operate within a specific temperature range - best to keep it there!
