Bavaria Fan Switch (archive)

Was wondering if anyone has had a problem with there fan switch. At least right now that's what I think it is. I went to the junk yard to find one and it actually looks like a resistor and not a switch, but that's to my untrained eye.
Can anyone offer insight into this?
