Assuming your tie rod separator is also known as a pickle fork... Get it wedged in very strongly between the two components. Applying continuous pressure, while tapping excessively hard on the outside of the joint (the part holding the tapered shaft)with a sizable hammer. It helps if you have soaked the tapered shaft generously in penetrating oil after you removed the nut (You Did Remove The Nut???).

Also, as mentioned, playing heat on the outside of the joint will expand the outer joint away from the tapered shaft. I like all the methods posted so far, including the BH method.
