Yes, a 5 speed converson IS pretty straightforward, especially if you have the crankshaft of an automatic transm., you won't be up for a great problem.

About interchangablilty, care for a 5-speed-OD box with a mechanic speedo (has to be out of an early E12-528i or early 6-Coupè).

I think that your assumption about using E28 parts to accomplish getting a running car are wrong. E28 won't help you much with transmission (electronic speedo, rearloader diff.).
