My Bavaria always ran best with extra advance, are you sure you have it the timing mark, not the TDC on the flywheel? Move it up some by ear and see if it pings like crazy, if not keep it up until it does then back off a little and it should be much stronger feeling, much more torque but no more overall horsepower. I had the distributor vacuum control arm come off one time and it ran very hot and poorly.
