When I was a kid my dad had bought this used '72 Bavaria that had this permeating gas smell that filled the interior. You really had to drive with the windows down. He finally got rid of it because of this (and the fact that it seemed to require daily repair:)

Is this a common problem on Sr Sixes?

Yes here is a link explaining some of the causes and fixes for this problem http://rampages.onramp.net/~tomark/FAQ/fumes.htm
