Basic question on Bavaria... (archive)

I'm actually an E46 owner-- but am interested in old BMWs as well. I've seen several Bavarias-- was this model name only used in the US for 2800 and 3200 E3 models? I've lived in Germany and I never saw a car that said "Bavaria" on the back, so I thought maybe this was a US only model tag. Also, do people consider this car the predessor of the 7 series or the 5 series? Didn't the E12 5 overlap the E3 by a couple years? Thanks.
