The bavaria nomenclature was a USA only name. Basically - the bavaria model was a less luxurious - cost effective version of the 2500 / 2800 / 3.0 sedan. (no power windows or electric sunroofs generally, also rarely with leather interior). The bavaria was about the best bargain out there back in 1972-1974. Fantastic refinement, power, handling - but none of the flabby extra luxury stuff to weigh it down.

The E3 / bavaria chassis actually evolved into the 7 series - as the later 3.3 and 3.3L versions got longer and more luxuriously equipped. Even the front suspension parts are shared on the later E3s and 7 series cars!

The E12 5 series body style actually STARTED production in 1972 in Europe with the 520i (a tii motor in the 4 door 5er shell) - so I wouldn't say it's evolved FROM the bavaria really.

"bavaria" emblems are hard to find (NLA new) , as many Europeans snagged those badges up so they could affix them to all manner of "lesser" vehicles. I saw "bavaria" emblems on fiats and Ladas last time I was there!

HTH!
