If you want a winter beater car, an old BMW (meaning 1970s) is a bad choice because they rust ravenously and are not the most reliable things in really cold temperatures. Later BMWs, such as the 1980s 528e, can be bought cheap and are reliable if maintained. Other good winter beaters are old Camrys and Accords (reliable, comfortable, and disposable) and old Volvo 240s and 740s (sturdy, reliable, and indestructible, but need snow tires). Still other good choices are big 1980s FWD GM cars, such as the Pontiac Bonneville, Olds 88, Buick Park Avenue, etc. These are also very sturdy and reliable, with good heaters and comfy interiors. They are, however, ugly and lousy handling.
Good luck
