Trini,
'02's are great cars in all forms from stock to wildly modified, but not one of them had the wonderful BMW M30 inline six. With this engine at their heart a whole generation on "big" BMW's couldn't go wrong.
Just as you listed them, E3 "Bavarias" have the same virtues as '02's. Members of the Senior Six Registry have turbocharged, shoehorned monster "M" engines into, raced and rallied their "Bavarias."
Others (like me) drive sedately to work all week, run the twisty roads on weekends, load the wife, kids and mutt up for a summer cross-country vacation, then polish up the old girl and enter it in the local car show.
Check out the SSR Website, and one of the beauties there.
Still, if you have to ask, you probably won't get it. That's okay, because good examples of these cars are starting to become rare.

I understand there is probably a nostalgic type value attached to these cars for some of you when you bought it new
I also understand some things can't be explained....but if most of you could help me in understanding the appeal of these cars..I'd appreciate it
Bearing in mind I posted a similar question to the 2002 board a while back and the general consensus is ease of modding, working and still cutting edge handling, as well as a few intangibles,,I may be off, but that criteria dosen't seem to apply here...or does it
