hunting and rough idle. (archive)

My 1976 3.0 SI hunts badly and idles rough. I started recently to have exuast smell in the car. Any advice on what may be the cause and how to fix it. I took it to a number of mechanics and seems no body can tune up the engine. I have 65000 miles on a rebuilt engine. Have no problem when crusing on the freeway.
