Thanks for the note... but two questions:
First - the little hole in the venturi that you refer to... am i right in assuming that i need to take the upper level of the carb off to gain access? It looks to me like the channel from the do-hicks that have the diaphrams in them to the carb body proper intersects with the carb on its middle level.
Second - regardless of anything else... if the carbs were functioning correctly should there be sufficient vacuum to actuate the stage twos with the vehicle stationary and me staring down the throat i.e. should the choke open once the appropriate revs are reached, or does she need to have some sort of genuine load on?
Cheers

The vacuum port for the secondary diaphragm is in the wall of the outer secondary venturi on the diaphragm side. If you look closely down the barrel, you'll see a little hole there.
Manually push the diaphragm link to mimick its operation, and then cover the vacuum hole with a finger. When you release the diaphragm, it should hold the link open -- not all the way open, but it should not allow it to close. If the link returns to the closed position, then the diaphragm has a leak.
This is one of those things that is way more difficult to describe that to actually do. Let me know if this doesn't make sense and I'll try to look for some pictures to point at.
