This is the age old questions of HP vs time vs money, one that is not solved easily!
1) Do a tuneup (set timing/adjust carbs/check cap/rotor/spark plugs/wires and replace worn items)
2) Install a different rear differential (for instance if your car has a 3.45 rear, install a 3.64 or 4.11 etc for quicker acceleration.... it will not make your car FASTER though.
3) You can port match the intake and install K&N filters. Then change the exhaust sytem (by bolting on headers etc). This might add 5-10 hp.
4) Install sidedrafts. Although this option really isn't cheap....unless you're like me and have new carbs sitting in a box that I've had for years.....
5) Pull a 3.5 liter engine out of a wrecking yard and drop it in... total cost might be as low as $400.
6) Install NOS.... yes NOS...... That will add hp quick... but might also put your beloved Bavaria one step closer to the graveyard too... unless you open your wallet and fix all the other problems your car is bound to have cosidering it's age Hint: upgrade the brakes and suspension to match the higher HP! Also make sure you engine is in top notch form otherwise you may find little bits of it scattered on the roadside the first time you do a NOS hit.
Does this help?
