Your car most likely has the "infamous" poor ground syndrome...the nut on the back of the temp gauge needs to be cleaned and reattached. I need to do this on my son's '87 325is also.

Have you tried to "slap" the top of the dashboard? I'll bet the needle moves if you do this....just a gentle slap, of course.

My mechanic actually said the car may have a bad cylinder head (the gauge was reading near the red)...the car was not overheating! slapped the dash and the needle "nailed" 12 o'clock.
