318 Brake Job, How much??? (archive)

I inspected the pads on my 84 318 front brakes today and saw that they were considerably low. Actually, one side was completely worn down, while the other was OK. I am sure this means that the caliper needs to be rebuilt (due to poor piston travel). Have any of you had a brake job recently? How much should I be expected to pay. I would do the job myself, but it is nice to have a warranty and liability of failed brakes shift to the "other guy."

Also, I have heard that you could buy a pre-rebuilt caliper for the 318i and just slap it on with a fluid change. Is this true, and if so how much does this cost? This I would be inclined to do.

Another thing, I read that the rotors on the 318i were not to be resufaced more than once, and to be replaced for a brake job...that being why they are so cheap ($25). Is this correct, or should I just have them turned.

Any help would be great. I really know little about breaks and don't want to be ripped off by the brake guy. Thanks

JT
