What is an A pack? (archive)

Have an 88 325, automatic transmission. Recently took it to a new shop, mechanic suggested preventive maintenance on the A pack. I've never heard of the term and neither have a few other bimmer owners I know. Is this legit? Any idea on effectiveness or cost if it is legit?
