He is talking about one of the the clutch sets in the transmission. The "A" pack is the one you always read about that goes bad if the car was reved up in park or neutral. I've read about a procedure where a modification can be done to prevent this, but I also read that by '88 the factory had fixed that problem. What kind of maintenance is he talking about? Was the fluid brown and burnt smelling - this can be a sign the clutch is failing. Other than replacing the clutch pack, I don't think much else can be done except changing the filter, fluid, a few seals and adjustment to the shift linkage and kick-down cable.

: Have an 88 325, automatic transmission. Recently took it to a new shop, mechanic suggested preventive maintenance on the A pack. I've never heard of the term and neither have a few other bimmer owners I know. Is this legit? Any idea on effectiveness or cost if it is legit?
