I do not know what type of car you are talking about but i was having the same problem on my 88 325i, change airflow meter, idle control valve, 2 new sets of spark plugs, new distribuitor, new wires, new battery, new rotor, spend a fortune and did not solve the problem, but refuse to take to the dealer, i was even thinking of selling the car ship, but one day decide to change the motronic unit and all the problems gone, no more overheating and no more idle problems.
PS. sad part about it that the motronic unit was sitting in my garage for about two years.
HOPE THIS HELP, ASK A FRIEND TO LET YOU THE MOTRONIC UNIT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING.
