I can address #3 & #4:
A chip changes the timing and fuel map, basically advancing the timing. You get more torque and therefore more hp. The engine isn't really working much harder, its not like you're getting it all from more rpm. You will have to use premium fuel to prevent pinging (though I accidently ran a tank of regular with no problems at all, but I wasn't pushing it either). Chips are simple to change, you can easily do it yourself. The Dinan chip has good instructions. Most say the Conforti chip (Turner Motorsports) is the best. While not a huge change like NOS or a turbo, you'll feel the difference with a chip. Its well worth the $.
