: Who came up with the term Bimmer? I think it sounds dumb. I have always called my car a Beemer, and noone has ever thought I was talking about a motorcycle. Hell, we are talking about the name of the manufacturer anyway. They're all Beemers!

It's a nickname originating in where the cars and bikes do, Germany. And yes, Dave S. is correct. BMW AG does have a stand on that. The stand is very eloquently addressed at bimmers.com - bimmer= car; beemer=bike. I think where the problems are encountered are with pronounciation.
Bimmer should accurately be pronounced with the 'i' sounding like you're saying the word "him". Replace the 'h' in "him" with a B and add "er". There you have it...B(h)immer.
Beemer should be pronounced B-ee-mer. The e's are long e's.
The truth is, most people say Beemer and mean the car, when that is wrong. Even then, people that know "bimmer" say it "beemer" and nobody's the wiser!!!! I say it correctly, just like Bimmer Magazine, BMW AG, and everybody else that knows what it is. And I'm a southerner too. ;)
