I'm on my second pan and it has a hole in it (my wife is an animal!). I paid $150 for a used one. I had the current one patched and it has held for 4 years now. It has been my experience that they can take several minor hits without catastropic failure but they don't fare well when they take a direct hit. Kind of a goofy design to have the lowest part of the car to be the oil pan, but what can we do? New is always better than used but it isn't that hard to inspect for cracks. It's up to you to decide how much you want to spend.
