Sounds very easy, bad differential most likely. I just had the same problem in my 6er, changed the diff and no more noise. You can usually pick up a decent used one for $150-200 unless you want limited slip. Rebuilt diffs are usually $750-1000. I bought used from a wrecked car and had no problems over the past year. Figure about 2-3 hours to remove (lots of penetrating oil and beating of hammers) then on 20-30 minutes to install the new one.
: I just spent four hours replacing my wheel bearings, but the noise is still present. It is a whooshing noise, sounds like a loud fuel pump, the noise starts at about 20 mph(audible)and does not change freq. turning does not affect the noise. pulled the emergency brake still no change(while moving).A drop in rpm no change, braking no change, only when decelerating the noise wienns(sp)down. No viberation at all.If you have an idea as to what the problem is, please let me know.BTW this my fourth e30.
