yes, its possible, although the fit in the rear wont be exactly perfect. things you will need:

front and rear bumper covers
front and rear bumper carriers
front and rear bumper shocks
left and right brackets for both front and rear
some engineering skills
time
patience

it can be done, ive seen plenty of pre 9/87 cars with the newer bumpers. go to www.e30.de and search through some of the cars of the month. there is a gold '86 with the bumper conversion.
