it's OK as long as no dust or particles get in the oil, but the reality is ... we live in the "disty world". That's why the filter is needed, but then the filter can only do so much for a curtain period ... to keep the engine health in good shape. We have to do the rest by changing oil (and filter)as often as possible. So 3k miles is the optimized interval between the healths of the engine and the environment. Remember changing the oil because of those little, tiny guys in the oil, not because the oil, itselft getting bad.
