: My wife and I are looking to purchase a late 90's convertible 3 series. However, we have stumbled across a 1989 325i with under 50,000 miles. Does anyone have any remarks - positive or negative - about the 1989 325i?

: Thanks!

The e30 body is a classic look. I find the main difference besides the obvious is the more open feeling while your driving the car. The distance between you and the e30's windshield is significantly greater than the e36. Personally, I like to open feeling. On the other hand the e36 chassis is much stiffer and "out of the box" handles better.

Parts for the e30 are plentiful and cheap and many upgrades choices. The '89 e30 has the ellipsoid headlamps and the slightly revised body (late '88 thru '92 that allows for you to simply and directly upgrade the bumpers to the plastic (body colored) bumpers. The main things to consider are:
Timing belt should be replaced every 60k mi
Front control arm bushings tend to fail(front end vibration)
Transmission flex joint will dry-rot
Other than that its just like any other BMW.

Depending on where you live license tag fee's and insurance will be less expensive.

I have an '87 325ic with 80K mi. The car has been great.
