: I have had a similar problem with my 87 325e, it seems to be fairly common. Ater making sure the fuel pumps work, I have determined the problem to be a bad oxygen (O2) sensor). Although I haven't installed it yet to know for sure (it is in the mail now) These are supposed to be replaced every 60k miles, and if they go bad, those are the exact symptoms. It costs about 100 dollars for a new one, and they are easy to install. I got alot of good advice from people on this message board, and you can check out what they said under the headings "i got problems" and "please help me with my 02 sensor." In short, it could be alot of things (failing fuel pump, computer malfunctions, air leaks) but it is probably the 02 sensor.
: Let me know what happens, or if you get any more insight.,

: P.S. Most people think one is just as good as the next, but Bosch 02 sensors are undisputedly of the highest quality.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do a sensor check and let you know if the o2 was bad. By the way, the engine pulls strong and smoothly when I really get on it. These few modifications really made the 2.7 come alive.
