Need info on auto to 5 speed gearbox swap. (archive)

I live in Israel and want to buy a BMW because I enjoy driving. The problem is the almost all BMW imported here have an auto gearbox. That is why I am interested in a 5 speed transmission conversion. Did anyone do this ? Was this project hard to do ? What I mean is, can I do it myself, an any BMW shop do it, or does it take a real specialist ? Was it expansive ?
