What do these buttons do? 325 (archive)

On my recently aquired 88 325 there are two buttons and i have no idea what they do. the car has every recipte for every oil change it has ever had, but no book. one is a small square one on the lefthand side of the shifter, and the other is a little longer on the righthand side. when i push them nothing seems to happen. im guessing they are probably broken. just wondering what they did.
