The volume of air passing thru is indeed larger. Someone contemplating an upgrade to a 2.8 litre engine should swap to a larger airflow meter. Should it be one from a 535? Maybe, but it will also have to be recalibrated, so that the door is at the same angle at high RPM as when in a 535 engine. You understand that a 2.5 doesn’t suck the same volume of air as a 3.5

Recalibrating the AFM is done simply by loosening or strenghtening the spring that is attached to the flap, under the black plastic cap. Mark your original settings with a white pen before attemting anything. Using an ETM, you can check if the pins are absolutely related between both AFMs.

Pete McHenry used to install the whole L-Jetronic injection harness and the AFM from a 528i when building a 2,8 l M20 motor.
