Visual difference between 325i and 325e engine (archive)

i have just purchased a 1987 bmw 325i,and with it comes a great deal of confusion. The VIN for this car says that it is an e, as does all of the other identification plates on the car. However on the trunk it says 325i and the manuals inside the car are from a 325i. I know the engine in it has been replaced, and i want to know if the e engine was replaced with an i engine. what is the visual difference between the two? How can i tell for sure? Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
