: i have just purchased a 1987 bmw 325i,and with it comes a great deal of confusion. The VIN for this car says that it is an e, as does all of the other identification plates on the car. However on the trunk it says 325i and the manuals inside the car are from a 325i. I know the engine in it has been replaced, and i want to know if the e engine was replaced with an i engine. what is the visual difference between the two? How can i tell for sure? Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

First, let's hope you didn't get scammed. Look for a silver idle valve by the intake manifold if it's there then you have an ETA engine, if it's not there and you have a black idle valve attached to the intake boot you have an i or Super ETA engine. If you have blue injectors and a 3.0 bar pressure regulator, you have an i engine. Jack the rear of the car up and see what the tag on the diff says also, they probably didn't change it so it should still read 2.93, which is bad if you really do have an i engine.
