: Can anybody tell me what they used on the 5-speed transmission input shaft splines ? The Haynes manual says to ONLY use Microlube GL 261. It goes on to say that if you don't that the clutch disk could bind on the input shaft and cause hard shifting. I've called around and nobody carries this Microlube GL 261. What else can I use ? Thanks for your input...

I couldn't find the Microlube anywhere, but
BavAuto or BMP sells a BMW lubricant #10 that
they say replaces the Microlube GL 261. I bought
a tube and the BMW part number on the label is
95 00 9 000 191. This is apparently what BMW
uses now.

As for the release bearing lube, any good
Molybdenum Disulfide grease will do (such as
VW CV Joint grease like Swepco Moly #101). There
is a BMW service bulletin floating around that
says if the replacement release bearing has the
plastic housing, to *not* use any lube where the
inside of the bearing slides along the guide
sleeve coming off the tranny. The Bentley shows
the old metal release bearing, but the plastic
one should not be lubed on the sleeve, just on
the two tabs that contact the release lever only.
Leave the sleeve and inside opening of the bearing
completely dry (but clean the sleeve of course).
