Annoying '88 325iX Steering Column Squeak (archive)

Anyone know if this is a common problem: My steering column squeaks for about the first two turns from the center position in either direction.
I took the steering wheel off and tried spray lube as far down in the column as I could get but the squeak must be beyond where the column is sealed.
Any ideas?
