Mass Airflow question (archive)

I'm considering either buying a larger Mass Airflow unit for my '90 325is or sending mine off to have it bored out larger. Does anyone have experience with this? Does it help performance, and does it do it by itself or will benefits only be realized if a freer flowing exhaust is also installed?
